The Truth About YouTube Growth Most Creators Won’t Tell You

Most creators focus on numbers. I focused on strategy.

You don’t need a massive following to start making money on YouTube. In fact, I wasn’t monetized by YouTube when I started seeing sales. Less than 300 followers on Instagram? Still made money. Under 1,000 YouTube subscribers? Still closed leads. Here’s how:

1. Treat YouTube Like the Search Engine It Is

YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world—and it’s owned by Google. That means your videos can show up on the first page of Google without being a top-ranking website. I built my strategy around this truth, leveraging keyword optimization to get my content seen by searchers with high intent.

Action Step: Do keyword research using tools like TubeBuddy, VidIQ, or Keywords Everywhere. Look for long-tail terms your ideal audience is already typing into search.

2. Optimize Every Video to Rank

Forget fancy intros or clickbait tactics. Instead, I focused on:

  • Using a keyword-rich title and description
  • Uploading a thumbnail with 4–5 high-impact words
  • Adding a call-to-action (CTA) early in the video
  • Embedding YouTube videos in SEO blog posts

Each piece worked together to increase visibility and drive traffic to my offers.

3. Leverage Shorts to Maximize Watch Time and Subscribers

If you’re not using YouTube Shorts, you’re leaving subscribers on the table. Shorts are dominating discovery, especially for newer creators. I repurpose top-performing Reels and TikToks, strip the logos, and upload them directly to Shorts—with native YouTube text tools for extra optimization.

Pro Tip: Keep Shorts under 59 seconds, keyword-optimized, and link them back to a longer form video in your description and cards.

4. Serial Content Wins Over Random Posts

In the beginning, I uploaded videos weekly on a single topic. That consistency trained the algorithm and positioned me as the go-to expert. I organized content into playlists by problem: skincare routines, lipstick breakdowns, etc.

Your Turn: Pick one niche. Plan 30 days of content around one key problem. Use the “who, what, why, how, when” framework to map each post.

5. Turn Videos into Traffic Machines with Blog Embeds

My monetization came from strategy, not platform payouts. I recorded keyword-targeted videos, embedded them in blog posts, and optimized each blog for SEO and conversion. My funnel looked like this:

  1. YouTube video solves a problem
  2. Blog post expands on the solution
  3. CTA leads to a freebie or offer
  4. Email nurtures the sale

This system still brings in leads years later.
